- Recurring contributions
After each election, ActBlue conducts a post-election audit and cleanup process to ensure that all candidates who participated in elections throughout the year have the appropriate next steps taken on their account.
While ActBlue will be monitoring election results as they come in across the country, we highly encourage you to submit the Post-election Candidate Form, where you can indicate:
- The result of your election
- Your future election plans
- Your next election date (if applicable)
- If or when you would like to stop accepting recurring contributions
- If or when you would like to stop accepting contributions entirely
If we do not receive a submission from you, we will take the following default actions on your account, based on the result of your race, but please note that any request you make through the Post-election Candidate Form will override the default procedures outlined below.
If your election is successful
- We will update your account to reflect your win.
- We will update your account to reflect your candidacy in the next election for this office unless there is a regulatory reason (e.g., term limits) preventing us from doing so.
If you are not planning for a future election or would like to stop fundraising for any reason, submit the Post-election Candidate Form, where you can request a deactivation of your account’s ability to accept donations.
If your election is unsuccessful
- We will disable your account’s ability to accept recurring donations approximately one month following your election.
- We will turn off your account’s ability to accept all donations entirely approximately one month following your election.
If you need to continue fundraising on ActBlue beyond those time frames, please submit the Post-election Candidate Form, where you can request that your account remain active and able to accept contributions for either of the following reasons:
- You need to recover campaign debt. If you are continuing to fundraise for campaign debt recovery, we will also need an estimated tentative date by which you anticipate finishing your fundraising.
- You have a specific and definitive plan to run for the same office in the next election using the same campaign committee.
If your election is going to a runoff, has an unresolved recount, or is otherwise too close to call, we will not take any action on your account.
Retaining account access
- You will always retain access to your ActBlue account and reporting data, regardless of the outcome of your race. Your account’s ability to accept donations has no effect on your ability to access contribution data.
Running for a different office
- Each ActBlue account for a candidate is set up specifically to fundraise for a single office and can only be linked to a single campaign committee. You can find the office associated with your account on the General Settings page of your Dashboard.
- You cannot use your ActBlue account to fundraise for any office other than the office your account is set up for. Raising funds for a campaign for a different office from the office associated with your account is a violation of ActBlue’s Account Use Policy.
- If you are planning to run for a different office from the one associated with your account, or if you are establishing a new campaign committee for your next race, submit the Post-election Candidate Form to let us know. You must set up a new ActBlue account for your next campaign.
Recurring contributions
- Disabling recurring contributions on your account does not automatically cancel existing active monthly recurring contributions–it simply prevents them from running, while also preventing donors from making new recurring contributions.
- If at any point you need to re-enable recurring contributions after they have been disabled, ActBlue will need to cancel all individual recurring contributions on your account to prevent contributors from experiencing unexpected recurring charges after a period of dormancy.
- Transfer Recurring allows you to give your donors the opportunity to opt-in to transfer their recurring contribution to a designated recipient of your choice. You can find more information about this feature here.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with you during this election season. We hope you’ll stay in touch and keep us informed of your next steps!
